Baseball Strength TRUTH- Hilliard, OH 

Zach Even-Esh is the reason I’m in strength and conditioning for athletes. He’s also the reason I started using kettlebells and love them.

Baseball was my sport growing up, however due to some difficult circumstances I had to stop. So I absolutely love training the baseball athletes that come in to our Hilliard facility.
.

As Zach makes his points, and I whole heartedly agree with him, about baseball specific workouts. Or football specific, or soccer specific, or hockey specific?
.

Any sport speficifc workout in terms of lifting or strength and conditioning is just General Physical Preperation (GPP).
.

To get Specific Physical Preperation (SPP) then you are talking more about sport specific drills. For baseball, taking batting practice, fielding ground balls or fly balls, pitching, etc……

As babies we can squat perfect then life, sitting, and weakness sets in

A lot of the kids that come in to our program they can’t do a proper body weight squat or a pushup. Weak core, poor posture. We get athletes strong. Our whole #1 goal is injury prevention, then #2 make them the best overall athlete they can be. Regardless of sport or position.

Take a look at any major leaguer who has had any length of a career. There is no off-season from strength and conditioning for them. A lot of athletes work with Athletic-Revolution-Hilliard during the off-season and pre-season and then stop training completely during the season. This pisses me off. You take an athlete who now is the strongest in the beginning of the season and then weakest when they need to be the strongest at the end of the season and post-season.

Then on the other hand you have the players who go and train with the team. Again our #1 thing with anybody is injury prevention. Most sports coaches aren’t trained in coaching proper form or technique. Very few athletes are gifted enough and strong enough to come into the weight room with perfect form……a lot of times you have to develop them so they can perform it right. But just know everytime they do an exercise incorrectly it increases their chance of injury.

With baseball being one of the most powerful and dynamic sports, especially pitchers, we want to make sure our GPP and strength and conditioning first and foremost reduces the chance of injury and also increases performance.

Like Zach said not everybody wants to be great. We’ve had athletes who start off great then things get hard for them and they slow down or completely stop. That’s a weak mindset. One of athletes was progressing through our FitRanX testing levels, made it thought level 2 with no problem and then got shut down on Level 3. He lost interest, started missing workouts, starting not giving his all when he was there and eventually quit completely. He just didn’t want it bad enough. Strength has to be earned. You just don’t make big gains all the time. Eventually they slow down, but that’s why we are here to guide athletes through that. But it takes a different mindset. A Champion’s mindset.
