Hilliard Strength Training: Hip Stability Control For Athletic Movement

In the video above, head strength & conditioning coach of Athletic Revolution-Hilliard, Jason Yun, takes you through the importance of creating torque when performing a squat movement.

This will also apply to any other lower body exercise or movement.

Torque is another way to say ‘get tight.’ You may have also heard the term ‘drive the knees out’.

This is a more specific way to do it and it greatly decreases the amount of shear on the knee and hip joints, which ultimately leads to a injury down the road.

Injury prevention is our #1 concern when working with our youth athletes in whatever sport they may play. It also is our #1 concern when working with our adult athletes as well. Because if you are injured or get injured then progress is halted and usually falls back months. Strength is a skill and it must be practiced much like dribbling a basketball/soccer ball, swimming, or smashing an overhead serve.

Also in the video is the point of the bracing sequence. These truly is the proper way to stand. At Athletic Revolution we see kids coming in all the time with crappy posture. We know they are doing this all day long— at school, playing video games, on the computer, at home, watching tv, eating breakfast/lunch/dinner, and while on the phone.

Teach your kids this technique, you need it as much as they do. Watch it together and practice, practice. practice. Bad posture is a bad habit that can lead to a host of issues later on in adult life, and severely retard movement in adult life.

Best to fix it now.

The better a kids posture, the better the spine, the better the spine the better the health, the better the health the better the athlete. The spine is the Central Nervous System— it controls everything!

If your child can’t do a proper squat with their bodyweight like demonstrated in the video, then they have no business performing with weights.

We have our kids do mobilizations all the time to correct movement, and we work with them on regressions until they are strong enough to perform the movement. That is long-term athletic development.

Some parents want speed training for a 6 or 7 year old– WHY?! If a child cannot coordinate their entire body with a simply body weight exercise like the squat, then speed training will do very little if anything at all for them.

Pateince is a virtue when developing a Champion of the future.

It doesn’t matter how good your child is against the other 6th graders or middle schoolers. The goal of most parents and child athletes is eventually to be good enough to get a scholarship and possibly the professional ranks. You can’t do that without persistent and consistenst strength and conditioning training.

That is what we do.
