Kids and Sitting- Hilliard Schools

Sitting is bad. Kelley Starrett says ‘sitting is death’. And I agree!

With kids sitting it’s an issue that will turn bad quick.

The majority of kids are going to be going to school from 8-3 or on a similar schedule. With very little activity– the majority of schools don’t even have ‘gym’ anymore. When I was in school it was pretty much the only thing I looked forward to. Of my top 5 all time teachers 3 of them were my physical education teachers.
 .
So if they are lucky enough to have gym they still will be sitting in class the majority of the day. Then majority go home, do their homework, play video games, watch tv, eat dinner, etc……. As you can see it all involves sitting.
 .
Some kids will have Athletic Revolution training in the evening. Some will have their sport practices or games. But the majority of their days will be sitting. And for athletes lookIng for the ultimate in sports performance, sitting can have a dramatic effect in a negative way on their game! And in life!
 .
More on that later.
 .
First, I doubt your young students education career has them involved with a standing desk, especially the public schools. Very few schools offer them. However, I did speak to one of our new trial champions at AR and he said there was a total of 26 kids in his class and 11 of them sat on swiss balls. It’s better then a desk and is progress in the right direction. I used to alternate between standing desk and swiss ball until I built up to being able to stand all day at my desk.
sitting at hilliard or dublin schools is death to an athlete
 .
But the benefits of standing desks are enormous. Not just for overall health but also for an increased learning experience, better posture, less inflammation, and improved performance in weight training, practice and games.
 .
Approach your kids school and upper administration officials to see if it can be implemented. It starts with you as a parent to help get this change on the way. Here is the link to some of the school systems in the area: Hilliard City Schools | Dublin City Schools | Upper Arlington City Schools | Grove City City Schools | Columbus City Schools
 .
But if it can’t or your not willing just yet, then here are some things that you can teach your child to do while in school to minimize the damage and save themselves some serious damage to their posture.
 .

At school:

  1. Be aware. Posture has a lot to do with attention– when is the last time you saw the military Stand at slouched?
  2. Educate. Obviously in order for them to be aware they must know why they are doing something. What are the benefits? What are the detriments?
  3. Periods. If your child has periods and breaks between classes make sure to do the routine down below. And be sure to not sit down as long as possible before the next class. Pace around the halls or in between desks.
  4. Ask to go. Ask to go to the bathroom every period– really. If you have to go GO! Duh! If not use this time to do some of the routine below and just walk and clear your mind. You’ll be more alert and able to pay attention when you get back to class
  5. At your desk. Sit on a lacrosse ball during class. Move it around about every 1-5 minutes. Longer time for the deeper trigger points and shorter for the not so deep. You can move it from your butt to your hamstring to your back.
  6. Sit correctly. Watch the video below of how to sit.

Before practice or after school or Athletic Revolution Training

    1. Foam roll. Every human should have one. Get one online here. Or pick one up at our studio.
    2. Do mobilizations- minimum 15 minutes total each day. A lot of these will be worse then actual training. Suck it up and do it. This goes for adults and kids! If you never fix the DAMAGE you do all day by sitting you are headed for problems later in life. You are killing the Grandma/Grandpa YOU!
    3. Never sit while training or at practice or games. If you want to be a bench player then sit. If you want to be an all-star or champion never sit. If you need to rest, lie down, or better yet do a mobilization or two.
      1. Or ‘sit’ in the squat hold position. Can’t get into this position and hold it? You’ve got some work to do–
    4. Standing desk. Get a standing desk at home for your homework
    5. Play video games? Stand and play

Now standing desks aren’t the end all be all, there still is an art to standing. It’s a skill. Standing with crappy posture is going to create issues as well.
