Should middle school and high school athletes back squat 🏋️‍♀️

Does your young athlete max out on the squat?

I had a soccer athlete come in and tell me his sport coach took the entire team through a 5 rep max in the squat. Many middle school and high school programs do this all the time.

However, the majority of kids can’t do a proper body weight squat. So there is no reason to add a weighted bar to their back.

Squatting is a skill. And must be practiced with good form to get better. Whenever you do it with improper form you are ingraining that bad pattern.

There is a progression we use at Athletic Revolution-Hilliard to move up to more advanced squats. But a lot of programs prime concern is just move as much weight as possible regardless.

#1 thing of any weight lifting program is injury prevention. Because if you are injured you can’t get better.
